1994 Dodge Viper RT/10. With its sinewy roadster body, rowdy side-mounted exhaust pipes and insanely powerful V-10 engine lurking underhood, the Dodge Viper recalled the brutal original Shelby 427 Cobra of the 1960s. While Chrysler's Izod show car of 1985 provided a foretaste, the Viper's development gathered steam in early 1988 during a casual meeting between Chrysler President Bob Lutz and Design Chief Tom Gale. They envisioned a simple, high-performance “image car,” an idea that was also supported by racing legend Carroll Shelby, who was a high-profile consultant for Chrysler at the time.

The resulting Viper made its debut at the 1989 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and was an immediate hit, drawing unsolicited order requests and deposit money on the spot. With its incredible 400 HP V-10 engine, stunning performance potential and race-inspired handling, not to mention its sinuous, menacing overall presence, the Viper legend was born, and its basic essence continued through distinct evolutions from 1991 to 2010, and then from 2013 through 2017 under the careful guidance of Chrysler's world-famous Street and Racing Technology (SRT) Division.
